Full AFL Rising Star votes: Caleb Serong claims big victory to claim 2020 award

Caleb Serong's outstanding debut season has been rewarded, with a near-unanimous judging panel declaring Fremantle on-baller the winner of the 2020 AFL Rising Star.
Serong's consistency over his 14 games — and the fact Gold Coast's Matthew Rowell didn't receive a vote — proved the award is a genuine recognition for a young player's body of work.

Finals Week 1

A $1.05 Rising Star favourite heading in to Thursday night's AFL Awards ceremony, Serong polled 48 of a possible 50 votes from the 10 judges to take out the award by nine votes from Sun Noah Anderson (39 votes).

Eight judges gave their full five votes to Serong, with only Richmond legend Kevin Bartlett and triple premiership Lion Chris Johnson ranking the Docker second behind Anderson.

Saint Max King, who booted 20 goals from 16 home and away games, finished third (28), while livewire Sun Izak Rankine and classy Hawk Will Day (12) rounded out the top five.

Serong slotted into Fremantle's midfield brigade with aplomb this season, averaging 16.9 disposals and 3.4 clearances. He was nominated for the award after his Round 8 performance against Geelong, which saw him boot one goal from 22 disposals and seven tackles.

The Docker said he was thrilled to follow in the footsteps of past Rising Star winners.
