'Golden SmartRider' competition launched to get West Australians back on public transport

Four West Australians will win a year of free bus, train and ferry rides as part of a new competition designed to boost flagging public transport patronage.
Anyone that uses public transport in the month of October is eligible to win one of the four "Golden SmartRiders" on offer.

To go into the running travellers must check-on to their trip using a SmartRider and complete an online entry form.

Premier Mark McGowan and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announced the competition this morning while revealing public transport patronage had levelled out at around 80 to 85 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Routes servicing universities – which have now been cut off from international students for nearly 18 months and moved many classes online – have been particularly hard hit, with travel numbers down between 40 and 50 per cent.
