Ben Brown was offered close to $850,000 a season for three years, with a trigger for a fourth, by North Melbourne at the start of 2020. has confirmed that negotiations stalled when manager Adam Ramanauskas pushed for a fourth year irrespective of triggers, pointing to Brown's superb consistency leading into the year, having booted at least 60 goals for three straight seasons.

As the COVID-19 crisis hit the AFL, the initial offer was quickly rescinded by the club, while Brown's form plummeted along with the on-field performance of the side.

Managing just eight goals from nine games in 2020, which was cut short by a knee injury, the financial ramifications for the 27-year-old may not truly hit home until a new deal is struck elsewhere, with his wage set to be far below that which was offered by the Kangaroos at the start of the season.
