COVID cases are increasing in Massachusetts, rising 9 percent above last week

New coronavirus cases increased by 8.7 percent in Massachusetts in the latest week ending Saturday as the state added 18,013 cases. The previous week had 16,566 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Massachusetts ranked No. 38 among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.

In the latest week, the United States added 1,184,520 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 16.5 percent from the week before. Across the country, 44 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Within Massachusetts, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Bristol, Essex and Hampden counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Middlesex County, with 3,732…
