Eight first information reports (FIRs) have been lodged in less than 20 days under the new Uttar Pradesh Prohibitio
LUCKNOW: n of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, promulgated by governor Anandiben Patel on November 28, 2020.

Here is a case-by-case account of the FIRs:

Case No. 1

Place: Bareilly

Date: November 29, 2020

The FIR was lodged at Deorania police station in Bareilly district on charges of allegedly trying to coerce a 20-year-old girl to convert. The police case was filed on the complaint of Tikaram Rathore, the father of the girl and a resident of Sharifnagar village.

Rathore in his FIR had alleged that Uwaish Ahmad, 22, had developed a friendship with his daughter while they were studying and wanted to coerce, coax and lure her into converting. The accused, was arrested on December 3.

Case No. 2

Place: Muzaffarnagar

Date: November 30, 2020

The FIR was lodged at Mansoorpur police station in Muzaffarnagar district on November 30. Two Muslim men — Suleman and Nadeem — were booked for allegedly trying to force a married Hindu woman to convert. They were booked under the new law as well as criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy. Both were arrested on December 6.

Case No. 3

Place: Mau

Date: December 3, 2020

The FIR was lodged at Chiraiyakot police station in Mau district on December 3. Fourteen people have been booked under the new law. Shabab Khan aka Rahul (38) and 13 of his acquaintances were also booked for kidnapping.

Police said that Khan, who is married, and his associates, allegedly abducted a 27-year-old woman on the eve of her wedding on November 30 with the intent to change her religion. No arrests yet.
