Environment News: NEW DELHI: In what could be a major boost to a global effort to protect at least 30% of the planet by 2030, India on Thursday joined a 'high ambition .
NEW DELHI: In what could be a major boost to a global effort to protect at least 30% of the planet by 2030, India on Thursday joined a ' high ambition coalition (HAC) for nature and people' to push for this goal ahead of the upcoming UN conference on biodiversity.Popularly known as the 30x30 target, this goal is a centrepiece of the treaty called post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Over 70 countries are now part of this Coalition with India becoming the first BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to join the 'high ambition coalition' (HAC).India's move will encourage all countries to formally adopt this goal at the UN conference - 15th session (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – which will be held in two parts due to Covid-19 pandemic. The first one will be held virtually from October 11 to October 15.
