Practicality of Body Moisture Recycling

Living on a planet thriving with an abundance of water, it's hard to think of it as a commodity, but on a desert planet, such as the planet Arrakis, every drop of water is a necessity. In the novel, Dune, Frank Herbert describes a world where water is so valuable that its inhabitants have to wear a special suit called a Stillsuit to keep their bodies hydrated. The Stillsuit is designed to filter and purify bodily fluids including sweat, urine, and moisture collected from feces. The technology of a Stillsuit seems kind of out of place here on Earth, but could it be something that can actually be manufactured and if so, does a Stillsuit have any practical application in today's society? The Stillsuit is mentioned throughout the book numerous times throughout the novel and is one of the most prominent uses of technology in the book. The technology of the suit is described early on in the novel by Kynes when the Duke Leto and his son Paul accompany Kynes into the desert to observe spice mining operations. Kynes describes the Stillsuit as a self-contained suit that uses the natural mechanics of body motion to pump water through purification membranes. Kynes describes the Stillsuit, "It's basically a micro-sandwich - a high-efficiency filter and heat-exchange system. The skin contact layer's porous.
