Dusty solar panels and darker skies are expected to bring the Mars lander mission to a close around the end of this year.

NASA has retired the InSight Mars lander mission after the probe failed to respond to two signals from controllers at the Jet Propulsion Lab in California. The mission studied the composition of Mars for over four years.

The agency's lander felt the ground shake during the impact while cameras aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the yawning new crater from space.

NASA's Mars lander, called Insight, is slowly losing power because its two solar panels are covered in dust and it will need to mostly shut down by the end of May.

NASA announced Tuesday that the InSight Mars lander is expected to become inoperative by December due to dust on its solar panels.
