When you listen to some melody, your brain doesn't perceive the notes in terms of their absolute pitch. Instead, it perceives each note based on how far away it is from the tonic - the first (or root) note of the scale. Tonic is an anchor everything revolves around. Our brain particularly likes it when the melody ends (or "resolves") on a tonic.
