The Assistant Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Energy is the head of the Office of Nuclear Energy within the United States Department of Energy. The assistant secretary is responsible for the department's nuclear technology research and the development and management of the department's nuclear technology infrastructure. The assistant secretary executes a budget totaling $870 million in fiscal year 2011. The assistant secretary is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The current assistant secretary is Dr. Rita Baranwal.
