David J. Shafer (born April 29, 1965) is an American politician who currently serves as the Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. He formerly served in the Georgia State Senate. He represented Senate District 48, a suburban district located north of Atlanta and including portions of Fulton County and Gwinnett County. Shafer is a Republican. Shafer was a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor in 2018, but was narrowly defeated in the primary runoff election by Geoff Duncan. On May 18, 2019, Shafer was elected Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party at the party's state convention.
