With his head shaking and perpetual incredulous hand gesturing, Jürgen Klopp cut a bemused figure on Friday morning.

Liverpool have less than 48 hours until they face Leeds United in the Premier League. Yet, as of the time of writing, the coach, the club and the players were in the dark about the eligibility of vital players Fabinho and Alisson Becker for what is a crucial trip to Elland Road. The situation has since been remedied at the eleventh hour, but the problem is far from solved.

The Brazilian pair, alongside Roberto Firmino, were called into the senior national team squad for the September international break. However, the Premier League sides collectively made the conscious decision to obstruct them from leaving for national team duty due to the Covid-19 restrictions meaning they would have to quarantine upon their return.

With Brazil currently listed as a red zone country by the UK government, leaving to join up with the Brazil squad would have meant a 10-day quarantine period in a hotel upon their return to England.

The refusal has been met with a rebuke from Brazil who initially pushed FIFA for sanctions on the players involved, with the South American country's FA invoking a regulation that allows them to intervene with club football.
